Samsung Galaxy Watch 2018

Worth Paying Extra?

The galaxy series just got its newest younger brother here in Australia after being available overseas for weeks but its finally here, but is it worth it?

I haven't had every smartwatch in the world but I have had a few and tried about a dozen. The day I first put on my 46mm band Galaxy Watch 2018 I had been using my fitbit 2 all morning and the difference was insane. The fitbit feels like a children's toy in comparison, aside from weight and size lets dive a bit further into this review shall we.

The boring stuff

Some out there will only be able to see what they want through the spec sheet and thats an easy one, so here it is.

Processor: Samsung Exynos 91101.5 ghz dual core
ram: 768gb for the 46mm band model we're looking at but 1.5gb for the LTE version
screen: 1.3" 360x360 for the 46mm band model
durability: IP68 water and dust resistant which is nice to see
storage: 4gb on board (about 2.5 usable)

The specs dont leave us wanting for too much more, maybe rounding the ram up to 1gb for all base models would have been a nice touch but otherwise its durable, snappy and the screen is gorgeous.

Sleek and Sexy

The look and feel of this screams dollars. The heft and materials gone into this make it feel premium without costing more than just one limb. The rotating bezel feels solid and has a serious snap to it when in use.

Wait but does it work?

In actual day to day use the watch is more than usable, I was deleting emails, responding to text messages, making phone calls and playing music on it for extended periods of time. The interface is well thought out and even has a quick launch screen available when rotated to the right which is a nice feature most wear OS watches don't have.

the rotating bezel is still its greatest strength, having used the ticwatch E with wear OS recently and you can feel the difference in usability, ease of access and overall satisfaction.

Being Tizen OS instead of wear OS has its ups and downs though. Support from google is nil and I found some apps like shazam I would go to use and find myself having to pull out my phone when I previously wouldnt have. Bixby is still nearly unusable having misunderstood me multiple times when replying to tests and emails and using the 'hey bixby' function was almost painful to use especially compared to google assistant on other wearable devices, the one saving grace for me is that bixby will talk to you unlike on the ticwatch E with google assistant.

'It done broke on me'

the durability of the device is utterly astounding having worn it at work for my first week and not having a scratch on it. This was scraped up walls, bashed on trolleys and I even managed to hit the screen once or twice with sharp objects to no avail.

The rotating bezel is made of a magnificent rubber that protects the whole front of the phone and adding to the durability and premium feel of the device when using.

great or garbage?

Packing the watch with almost every feature you could hope in a smart wearable device, making some models more affordable than the Apple watch and still making feel like it costs a darn site more than it does makes this an excellent buy. I will say that if your looking for something with a wider range of compatibility the LTE wont work with some phones in some countries so beware before buying for that.

The watch is going to get the same treatment as their phones from me though, they need to offer google assistant as an alternative to bixby, its not as good as either google assistant or siri and shouldn't be the only assistant on offer for any of their devices, moving past that though definitely worth a serious look if your in the market.

Make sure to check ouyt the video review in the link here for hands on view of the watch itself.
